Blockchain for SMEs: use cases, smart contracts and decision framework

Blockchain technology creates traceable, tamper-resistant records without a central controlling authority. These properties are useful in a handful of concrete mid-market scenarios: supply chain transparency, provenance proof, token-based business models and inter-organisational processes without a shared trust basis. This page supports the pre-technology decision.

The honest preliminary question is: does this problem actually need a blockchain, or does a secured database with an audit log solve the same problem more cheaply and maintainably? Blockchain is not a universal remedy – it is a sound architectural decision when decentralised trustlessness is genuinely the requirement.

Smart contracts automate rule-based transactions on-chain – payment releases upon delivery conditions, automatic commission settlements, token-based access rights. They require formally correct specification and security audits before production use.

Suitable SME use cases and common decision errors

Suitable: document authenticity proof (certificates, records), supply chains with multiple independent parties, tokenised assets, NFT-based licences. Unsuitable: internal databases without multi-party requirement, processes where a trusted central authority already exists.

Common mistake: using blockchain for internal data history instead of a simple append-only database. Consensus mechanism, node operations and smart contract maintenance costs exceed the benefit when no genuine decentralised trust requirement exists.

Public vs. private blockchain is a key further decision: public chains (Ethereum, Solana) offer maximum decentralisation but public data transparency. Private chains (Hyperledger, Polygon Edge) allow data control but reduce the trust-minimisation benefit.

Smart contracts: development, audit and operations

Smart contracts are immutable code on-chain – bugs are not easily corrected after deployment. Formal specification, unit-tested Solidity/Rust code and an independent security audit before go-live are prerequisites for production-grade systems, not optional steps.

Upgrade patterns (proxy pattern) enable controlled corrections post-deployment but introduce complexity and partially remove immutability guarantees. The decision for or against upgradeability is an architectural choice with lasting implications.

Operational costs arise from gas fees (public chains) and node infrastructure (private chains). These are often underestimated in project budgets – reliable figures only emerge after test operations under realistic transaction volumes.
