The Challenge

Regional station, mobile expectations

Radio Ostfriesland combines local reporting, music, and presenters on FM (including 94.0 MHz Aurich, 87.7 MHz Emden, 103.9 MHz Leer) with digital reach. Listeners on the move expect stable live playback on smartphones, clear controls when switching between cellular and Wi-Fi, and programme and news surfaces that support quick scanning – without support noise around the stream or playback behaviour that distracts editorial teams from daily work.

Technology and operations

A radio streaming app must behave reliably across heterogeneous devices: Android OEM differences, iOS versions, battery optimisation, and background rules. Streams should resume smoothly after brief network drops; the UI should present show information and regional news in a clear hierarchy. Operationally, teams need traceable builds, store compliance, and update paths for new OS releases – with a local partner who can align media and engineering requirements.

iOS and Android app

We implemented the Radio Ostfriesland app for iOS and Android: live programme streaming, structured presentation of programme and news information, and UX suited to commutes, in-car use, and home listening. Distribution is via the Apple App Store and Google Play so listeners can install and update the app through the official listings.

Collaboration with the broadcaster

The project illustrates how we work with a regional media brand: short paths from Leer/East Frisia, clear communication around releases, and a focus on everyday listener needs. When platform policies change for media apps, we align the app incrementally so Radio Ostfriesland stays digitally reachable while editorial effort stays on content and programming.

Results

Benefits for listeners

The app complements terrestrial reception: East Frisia and beyond are available via stream – whether commuting, travelling, or when FM reception varies. Programme and news can sit in one mobile surface without switching between unrelated single-purpose apps. For the station, the app remains a stable digital touchpoint alongside FM, web, and social channels.
