CRV Cattle Breeding App – Bull Selection & Herd Data
For CRV we implemented a specialized mobile app to manage and analyze cattle breeding data: farmers filter and compare sires by breed, performance traits, and genetic indicators to support better breeding decisions on farm or on the go. Built by Groenewold IT Solutions in East Frisia, Germany (Made in Germany).

The Challenge
Making complex breeding data usable
Dairy and beef operations depend on detail: breeding values, indexes, breed traits, and performance profiles have often lived in spreadsheets, PDFs, or specialist portals. That is impractical when a sire decision or a discussion with an advisor must happen spontaneously away from a desktop. The challenge was to present large datasets on a phone in a way that stays understandable, comparable, and calm—not overwhelming.
Filter logic and user expectations
Farmers and herd managers expect clear criteria: breed, origin, genetic emphasis, and performance direction must combine without turning the UI into a spreadsheet. Empty result sets from conflicting filters must be explainable; otherwise users lose trust in the data.
Mobile use in real farm conditions
Barns, parlors, and advisory visits rarely offer stable Wi‑Fi. The app had to read well on phones and tablets, support fast comparisons, and cope with uneven connectivity. Performance and a factual, understated UI mattered as much as correctness of the figures shown.
Our Solution

Native apps and clear information architecture
We delivered native iOS and Android clients so lists, comparisons, and detail views stay responsive and meet platform navigation expectations. Content is layered sensibly: filter state remains traceable, sire profiles are consistent, and comparison views summarize key figures without dumbing down domain language in arbitrary ways.
Integration with breeding data services
The app consumes data through defined web-service interfaces from the customer’s systems. On the client we emphasized robust error handling, meaningful loading states, and retries after interruptions—so sire work remains practical when reception on site fluctuates.
Quality, alignment, and delivery from Germany
Delivery was handled by our team in Leer (East Frisia): coordination with CRV on domain rules, release priorities, and testing on common devices. The result combines technical ownership with sector-specific usability—Made in Germany without offshoring core engineering.
Results
Stronger decisions where work happens
The app centralizes sire search and comparison in a mobile tool that fits modern herd management. Instead of switching between multiple sources, users can contrast parameters on device and prepare better conversations with advisors, insemination services, or herd consultants.
Maintainability and evolution
Clear separation of presentation, client logic, and API access keeps the solution extendable: new traits, adjusted filters, or additional views can be introduced systematically without rebuilding the entire app. That mirrors how we approach other industry apps—durable architecture instead of short-lived one-offs.
Domain depth and clarity
Structuring breeding values for readability
Genetic and performance indicators are grouped so farms without a data-science background can follow the storyline. Emphasis areas—milk yield, conformation, health-related indexes—appear as distinct blocks instead of a single wall of numbers.
Comparisons as a working tool
Comparison mode supports typical questions: which sires fit the herd direction, and where do profiles differ in measurable ways? That turns the app into a conversation aid on farm and with partners, not only a passive brochure.
Engineering and collaboration with CRV
Technically the project follows an API-driven mobile pattern: the server remains the source of truth for breeding data; clients handle presentation, caching where appropriate, and interaction logic. This split has proven itself across many B2B engagements and simplifies later security and compliance reviews because access is controlled centrally.
