TILSBERK HEAD-UP Display – Navigation App for Motorcycles & HUD

Companion app for the TILSBERK head-up display: ride data, navigation, calls and battery status via Bluetooth on the HUD – built by Groenewold IT Solutions in Leer, East Frisia, Germany (Made in Germany), for iOS and Android including GPX import for touring.

TILSBERK HEAD-UP Display – Navigation App for Motorcycles & HUD

Navigation & Mobility

The Challenge

Eyes forward, information still within reach

Riders need to keep their eyes on the road – yet they still expect dependable navigation, readable speed cues, and minimal distraction from the phone. A head-up display targets this tension: hardware projects information into the line of sight, but without a capable smartphone app there is no pairing, control, or data preparation. Add changing conditions (rain, sun, brief network gaps) and the expectation that calls and battery status are shown sensibly without unsafe interaction patterns.

Bluetooth, latency and product cadence

The link between app and display must be stable and predictable: pairing, reconnect after breaks, resilient error handling, and clear behaviour across OS updates. Native iOS and Android differ in permissions, background rules, and Bluetooth stacks – both tracks need ongoing care. For the manufacturer it is vital that features (such as GPX import for tours) can be shipped and distributed through the stores without weakening the core promise of safe information presentation.

Our Solution

Companion app for iOS and Android

We implemented the TILSBERK navigation app for iOS and Android: pairing with the head-up display via Bluetooth, preparing navigation, speed, incoming calls, time, and charge status so information remains usable on the HUD while phone controls stay understandable. Distribution is through the Apple App Store and Google Play; users install updates through the standard store flows.

Extensibility: GPX and touring

The product evolved: GPX import lets riders bring routes and tracks that matter for motorcycle touring – extending the app from pure display support toward companion navigation and tour support. Architecturally, the solution is designed to add data sources and features incrementally without destabilising Bluetooth communication with the hardware.

Partnership with the manufacturer, delivery from Germany

Working with TILSBERK combines product vision (hardware plus on-bike experience) with software engineering from our Leer/East Frisia location. Short communication paths, clear release alignment, and a focus on quality and maintainability fit a product that must prove itself on real roads – not only on marketing pages.

Results

Benefits for riders

The app bridges smartphone capabilities and the head-up display: key information sits in the field of view without turning the phone into a permanent distraction. Navigation, speed, and status cues stay in a coherent context; touring benefits from GPX import when riders want to bring their own routes.

Reference for connected mobility and BLE

For companies with accessories, sensors, or displays, this project shows how we deliver native mobile, Bluetooth pairing, and store processes end to end – developed in Germany with a strong focus on robust device communication and long-term maintainability. If your idea needs a similar bridge between phone and hardware, this case study is a concrete pattern for architecture, releases, and iteration.

Safety and focus on riding

Less staring at the smartphone

The goal is not “maximum features” but clear presentation of what truly helps while riding. Information priority and on-display logic follow that principle.

Robustness in daily use

Brief disconnects, standby-to-ride transitions, and OEM differences are normal in the field. The app is built to handle these constraints pragmatically without overwhelming users with technical detail.

Technology and releases

Two platforms, one product promise

iOS and Android are maintained in parallel so the TILSBERK ecosystem does not split: riders expect comparable core features and dependable updates when operating systems or store policies change.

GPX as a touring benefit

GPX import extends usage beyond baseline navigation: clubs, tour providers, and ambitious riders can use their own tracks – provided data handling stays stable and transparent inside the app.
