FAQ

EU AI Act compliance costs

AI Act & risk classes

Which AI systems does the EU AI Act cover?

The AI Act classifies AI by risk: prohibited practices, high-risk systems (e.g. AI in HR, critical infrastructure or credit scoring), AI with transparency duties (chatbots, generative AI) and minimal risk. Obligations phase in gradually – transparency and GPAI rules already apply, high-risk requirements follow through 2027.

Is my chatbot a high-risk system?

Usually not. Customer-service chatbots mostly fall under transparency duties: users must be able to recognise they are interacting with AI. High-risk kicks in for AI-assisted candidate screening or credit decisions – then risk management, data quality and documentation duties apply.

What are the penalties under the AI Act?

Fines up to EUR 35m or 7% of global revenue for prohibited practices; up to EUR 15m or 3% for violations of high-risk obligations. Deployers – not only providers – carry obligations too.

What does an AI Act assessment cost?

An inventory of all deployed AI systems with risk classification and action plan typically runs EUR 4,000–12,000 excl. VAT – depending on system count and existing documentation.

Which ongoing obligations arise?

For high-risk systems: continuous risk management, logging, human oversight and post-market monitoring. For generative AI: labelling of AI-generated content. Article 4 additionally requires AI literacy training – mandatory since February 2025.

Typical pricing models (overview)

Comparison: typical pricing models for software and IT projects
ModelWhen it fitsBudget & flexibilityTypical risks
Fixed price (fixed scope)Clearly defined scope, stable requirements, repeatable delivery.Predictable total cost; little room for change without a change order.Scope creep leads to change orders or quality trade-offs.
Time & MaterialDiscovery, legacy, evolving requirements, or close collaboration.Maximum flexibility; budget transparent via hourly or daily rates.Without prioritisation, effort can grow—backlog and reviews matter.
Retainer / maintenance packageOngoing operations, updates, small features, and support.Agreed capacity per month; predictable follow-on cost.Large changes may still need a separate estimate.
Hybrid (milestone + T&M)MVP or phased releases with clear go-lives, then iterate.Core delivery fixed price; extensions on a time-and-materials basis.Define contractually what is in scope vs. extra work.
