FAQ

Website maintenance costs

Maintenance budget

What does website maintenance cost per month?

Maintaining a corporate website starts at around EUR 250–450 per month excl. VAT (updates, backups, security patches). Online shops run EUR 450–900 due to payment and plugin updates; custom web apps EUR 600–1,500 depending on SLA. The calculator narrows the fee by type, technology and service level.

Is a maintenance contract worth it compared to ad-hoc work?

In almost all cases, yes: regular small updates prevent expensive emergency call-outs after hacks or incompatible plugin updates. A single emergency recovery quickly costs six times a monthly fee – not counting the downtime itself.

What is included in the monthly fee – and what is not?

Typically included: CMS/plugin updates, security monitoring, backups with restore tests and a monthly status report. New features, redesigns or larger content work run as separate orders – based on our hourly rate of EUR 140 excl. VAT.

Services & SLA

Which service level do I need?

Standard (response within 1–2 business days) is enough for most corporate websites. Extended (same business day) is recommended for shops and lead generation. Premium with guaranteed response times including weekends targets revenue-critical systems.

Why is WordPress cheaper to maintain than custom systems?

WordPress updates follow standardised procedures and can be heavily automated. TYPO3 and shop systems need more testing per update; custom applications additionally require deployment pipelines and regression tests – but avoid many plugin risks.

What does SEO monitoring add?

SEO monitoring (from about EUR 150/month) tracks rankings, crawl errors, load times and broken links. Problems surface after days instead of months – especially after updates or content changes that can silently cost rankings.

Typical pricing models (overview)

Comparison: typical pricing models for software and IT projects
ModelWhen it fitsBudget & flexibilityTypical risks
Fixed price (fixed scope)Clearly defined scope, stable requirements, repeatable delivery.Predictable total cost; little room for change without a change order.Scope creep leads to change orders or quality trade-offs.
Time & MaterialDiscovery, legacy, evolving requirements, or close collaboration.Maximum flexibility; budget transparent via hourly or daily rates.Without prioritisation, effort can grow—backlog and reviews matter.
Retainer / maintenance packageOngoing operations, updates, small features, and support.Agreed capacity per month; predictable follow-on cost.Large changes may still need a separate estimate.
Hybrid (milestone + T&M)MVP or phased releases with clear go-lives, then iterate.Core delivery fixed price; extensions on a time-and-materials basis.Define contractually what is in scope vs. extra work.
