The Challenge
Parents, hardware monitors, and expectations
Parents need a reliable and secure way to monitor their babies without buying expensive specialized devices. Conventional hardware baby monitors are expensive, have limited range, and often lack video.
Streaming, BLE, battery, and privacy
The technical challenge was multifaceted: real-time audio and video streaming via WebRTC must work stably on hundreds of smartphone models with different OS versions, camera APIs, and audio hardware. Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity for local mode without internet—where both devices talk directly—was especially critical; iOS and Android differ fundamentally in BLE stack implementation. Battery optimization was another core issue: the sender device must last overnight while camera, microphone, and network stay active. Standard power-saving mechanisms on iOS and Android aggressively kill background processes, which would be fatal for a baby monitor. Requirements also included secure firmware updates, GDPR-compliant data processing, and a UX that exhausted parents can use intuitively at 3 a.m.

Native development: WebRTC, BLE, and on-device ML
We developed the Lullio Baby Monitor App natively for iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin), turning two smartphones into a full-featured baby monitoring system. For real-time streaming we use an optimized WebRTC implementation with adaptive bitrate: when the network is poor, video resolution is reduced automatically while audio quality stays prioritized—parents need to hear their baby first. BLE communication for offline mode uses each platform’s APIs directly (Core Bluetooth on iOS, Android BLE APIs), so pairing, range, and power behavior match OS expectations. On-device ML detects sound patterns such as crying, coughing, and laughing and distinguishes them from ambient noise—reducing false alarms by over 85%.
Battery, security, and compliance
For battery optimization we implemented a custom foreground service (Android) and background audio session (iOS) so the OS does not kill the app. Intelligent duty cycling alternates between active monitoring and power-saving audio-only mode. Over-the-air updates for ML models improve sound detection continuously without manual app updates. End-to-end encryption protects all streams; data is processed only on parents' devices—no cloud storage, full GDPR compliance.
Results
Launch, downloads, and quality
The Lullio app launched successfully on the App Store and Google Play, with over 50,000 downloads in the first six months and an average rating of 4.8 stars. On-device ML sound detection reaches 94% precision for baby crying vs. ambient noise, cutting false alarms by 85% compared to simple decibel thresholds. Battery optimization enables 8+ hours of continuous monitoring on most devices—enough for a full night.
Latency, offline mode, and retention
Average video and audio latency stays under 300 ms, even on mobile data. BLE offline mode works reliably within about 30 meters. Push notifications reach parents within about 2 seconds of detected activity. 92% of users recommend the app, and 30-day retention is 78%—well above the utility-app average.
