Healthcare revolution: How BLE changes medical technology
German healthcare is facing a fundamental change. Driven by demographic change, increasing costs and the desire for a more personalized medicine, digital solutions are becoming increasingly important. The focus of this development is the ** "Internet of Medical Things" (IoMT)**, a network of connected medical devices, sensors and platforms. The technology that enables this revolution is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). It allows reliable and energy-efficient communication between the patient and the device and thus lays the foundation for a connected, patient-centric health care.
1. Remote patient monitoring: The hospital is coming home
Continuous monitoring of vital data is often crucial for chronically ill patients or after a hospital stay. BLE-capable devices such as blood pressure meters, pulse oximeters or mobile ECGs allow this monitoring conveniently from home. The measured values are transferred automatically and securely to an app on the patient's smartphone and from there to a platform for the attending physician or clinic. This not only increases the quality of life of patients, but also allows doctors to react early on to critical changes, reduce the duration of the hospital stay and increase the supply efficiency.
2. Smart implants & wearables: Intelligent companions under and on the skin
The miniaturization of electronics paved the way for a new generation of smart implants and wearables. Modern cardiac pacemakers or implantable defibrillators use BLE to send data to the doctor and to adjust settings without surgical intervention. At the same time, medically certified wearables conquer the market. From continuous glucose measurement (CGM) for diabetics, intelligent plasters to monitor wound healing, to fitness trackers that can detect atrial dimmer – BLE is the standard interface to connect these devices to the smartphone and make the data accessible to the patient and doctor.
3. Asset Tracking in Hospital: Increase Efficiency and Security
In a hectic hospital everyday, valuable time is often lost in finding mobile medical devices such as infusion pumps, mobile ultrasound devices or wheelchairs. BLE-based asset tracking solves this problem. Small BLE tags are attached to the devices and enable accurate zentimeter location in real time. The staff sees on a digital K
